Amirthavarshini Global Academy for Carnatic Music - (AGAC)
In the year 2003, Dr. Renganatha Sharma and his wife Dr. Mohana Sharma had a vision to share their music to many deserving students and ensure the tradition of Carnatic music lives on. They started the music academy - Amrithavarshini in their house in Madurai and now about hundreds of students are actively learning at various levels from around the globe and the success of their students speak volumes about their schooling under Amrithavarshini.
Dr. Mohana Sharma M.A.,M.Phil., Ph.D was an able musician herself even before she got married to Dr. Renganatha Sharma. From a very early age, Mrs. Mohana was exposed to the world of Carnatic music, she started learning Carnatic music under Sangeetha Vidwan Iraniyal Lakshiminarayana Bhagavatar from the age 7, later she pursued her advanced training in music under veterans like Sri Nellai T.V. Krishnamoorthy and Vechoor N. Hariharasubramania Iyer. Mohana Sharma secured her Graduation and Post Graduation in Music from Kerala University with First class and secured her M.Phil Degree from Tanjore Tamil University(2007) with first class. She completed her doctorate in Music under Dr. Aruna in Madurai Kamaraj University.
The backbone behind Amrithavarshini music academy is Dr. Mohana Sharma. She along with Dr. Renganatha Sharma ensures the learning of the students is aligned with the oral tradition of how they learnt from their Gurus. The musical couple take lessons over Skype and when students visit Chennai, they take in person lessons. Both of them also visit North America to spend time with their students when possible and are open to traveling to meet with the students too.
